Our Office Makeover

So we’ve been wanting to do our office over for about a year now, and when Rona showed her ugly face we decided it was the perfect time. Our office makeover was a great way for my hunny and I to bond during our time being on lock down, and we are ready to show it to everyone!

Even though Covid hit, thankfully, Terrance’s business didn’t skip a beat. Because he was working 10+ hours a day, our office makeover took us about a month and some change to complete. Thankfully Terrance is a licensed contractor and home builder, so a lot of the custom builds were able to be completed in our garage.

So for the about a month and a half the dining room was now my home office.

As everyone whose done a renovation before knows it turns messy very quick. After my most needed items were in the dining room, we moved everything to the center of the room. Now it was time to patch and prime. Thankfully that was Terrance’s job. I love to paint, but I don’t have patience with patching or priming and he definitely is the pro between the two of us!

As you can see from the before pictures, the room was very dark before the renovation. There was a built in desk (that came with the house) that was in the far corner of the room. I used it as a stand for my TV since I didn’t use the desk for its original purpose.

… so much patching and priming… YIKES!

We both agreed that we wanted to get rid of the desk. Now we had to think of what we were going to put in it’s place. I originally wanted to put a sitting bench and hang the TV above it. Then I wanted to have an area for sitting and reading. I also wanted to have a working area. Trying to figure out what to do with that corner was an every moment thought.

While I continued to think, to make it it more “official” with removing the desk, Terrance just ripped it out. Anyone who knows me, knows that I need to know what the next plan is. In not knowing the next step, I was freaking out. Since this is what Terrance does on a daily basis, that wasn’t that big of a deal to him.

Once the desk was out, he installed four recessed lights. The process for this was pretty interesting. He had to cut out parts of the ceiling, and go into the attic with wiring, in order to hang them. When I tell you that these lights have brought a new type of life to the entire room; It is an understatement.

Once the lights were hung, it was now time to paint!

We decided to go with a light grey for the walls and to have an accent wall that portrayed one of the four colors of my Self-Sufficient Classroom brand.

Building the Custom Built In!

The painting was beginning to wrap itself up (after several coats and one horrible brand color switch) it was time to figure out what we were going to do with the old desk area.

I loved the idea of being able to have a standing work station in that area. I also liked the idea of being able to have some type of cabinetry above the work station if we weren’t going to hang the TV in that space. Once I told T what I was thinking, he began to draw up some measurements, and pulled out his building skills.

We decided to create the standing work station that I wanted. As he was building the work station, I also came up with an elaborate idea. Sometimes I throw things out in the air and see if they stick to anything. Since Terrance was going to be building the standing work station, I thought about how cool it would be to include space for a mini fridge. He took the idea and ran with it!

We went online to Wayfair and found a fridge that we both absolutely loved! We got the measurements for the fridge, and since he is good with dimensions and measuring, he carved out enough space for the fridge to sit recessed in the built in!

Choosing The Accent Wall Color

As the measurements were being taken and the shelves were being built; it was now time to decide what color we wanted on our accent wall. We had originally went with a gallon of dark pink because that color is in my Self-Sufficient Classroom logo, but the more and more he painted the color onto the wall, the more it looked like a scene from out of a horror film.

We gave it about a day to dry on the wall and both agreed that it was not going to work. It was more of a gross red color, and would be more of an eyesore than anything else. We always thought that black would be a nice color on a wall somewhere in the house, so we just said, let’s go with a can of black.

Terrance moved the electric power box (is that what it’s even called) from the bottom of the wall to the top. He added outlets for more electronic plug options as well as a light that would later be installed under the top shelving unit.

Installing The Custom Built In

So after about two weeks of measuring, cutting, sanding, nailing, staining, and then staining some more; it was time to install the built in!

T had previously done the custom crown molding in the office about a year ago. He was able to create the same custom look for the top of the shelf. Our office makeover was now starting to come together!

As you can tell from the (above) I was so excited to get my books back on the shelf. When Terrance came home, he was not having this hodgepodge of a mess. He went through all the shelves and ordered baskets, stacking trays, book ends, and containers.

For the past few years I have been fawning over barn doors. I would always blurt outlaid how I love barn doors but our house really isn’t built for a barn door. Well my hunny came through (as he typically does) and surprised me with a custom built barn door! **insert heart emojis** He really is the best guy there is.

Choosing the Furniture

Last year we had purchased two of these shelving units from IKEA. We had plans to put them in the living room. Well, we decided to put them in the office since they seemed to pop on that wall.

Now that the main areas of the office were finished it was time to order the furniture for the office! Let me tell you! We spent a TON of nights on Wayfair, Overstock, and Amazon trying to find the perfect pieces. Searching for the perfect pieces was probably the hardest part of our office renovation. Of course I didn’t build the shelving unit or paint, but let me tell you; IT WAS HARDDDDD!

During our weeks of searching, we both had been eyeing a table that we saw at Wayfair. It was solid wood and had metal legs. We both agreed that the table would fit perfectly with the built in. It would also fit perfectly with the barn door that Terrance ended up surprising me with.

We put the table in the cart, along with two armchairs, a mirror, lamp, and sofa table.

Hiding the Cords

We wanted the table to sit away from the wall, but also wanted to keep the cords hidden. To solve this issue, Terrance mounted our power surge under the table. He then ran the wires down the table leg and under the carpet.

So for the most part our office is totally finished! Terrance is going to make me a custom bulletin board. We are going to take down the chalk board and put it in its place. This should help as I am mind mapping and getting all of my thoughts out!

We wanted to rip up the carpets, but decided to wait until we take up the carpets in the entire upstairs. For now, I will be just fine with the carpeting in the office.

I hope you have enjoyed the detailed version of our new office! Make sure you check out the video below to take a virtual tour! ooohhhh so fun! A virtual tour!

How Do I Create My Own E-Learning or Morning Message Slides

How do I create my own e-learning or morning message slides? This is the question that many educators have been asking since being thrown into e-learning. Many of us were trying to figure out how to turn our physical classroom into a virtual classroom.

Some of us are already out of school (whoop whoop), and some of us are quickly approaching the end of the school year. While we are all heading into summer, I thought it would be a great idea to show you How to create your very own e-learning or morning message slides!

I’ve created two YouTube videos to help with the beginning steps of the process!

The first video will show you how to actually create your slide. The second video will show you how to take your slide and put it into Google Classroom.

If you’d like to work along with the video, you will need the following materials: Microsoft powerpoint, clip art and your favorite fonts.

Both of these videos will be a great benefit to us as we head into another school year. We aren’t sure yet if we will be in the classroom or will be doing virtual learning again. Either way, you’ll be able to create your own e-learning or morning message slides for your learning environment.

If you would like to know who my favorite font and clip art artists are, make sure you check out My Favorites blog!

4 Key Components to Teaching

I alway knew that I wanted to be a teacher. When I was younger I would watch my mother as she homeschooled my siblings and I. I would see how excited she would get during a lesson and how dedicated she was in making sure that we were receiving a great education. The answer to “How I Got Started,” is because of my mother. Little did I know that my mother was demonstrating the 4 key components in teaching that I try to display each and everyday both inside and outside of the classroom.

Often times my mother would incorporate games into our learning. She would take us on learning adventures (field trips). Our science lessons were hands on and our reading would have any student eating out the palm of her hands. That drive that my mother has inside of her and the passion have never left me.

I’m Striving To…

As I teach in my classroom, I can’t help but to exhibit the same type of education that was given to me. In my classroom, I want to be the teacher who reaches encourages, motivates, corrects, supports, and loves her students. I want my students no matter race or sex, to know that I’ve got their back and I am their advocate and will fight for them. my students should know that I am cheering for them, I won’t give up on them, and they shouldn’t give up on themselves either. I want to be the one who finds the solutions to the problems that they may encounter both in a lesson or even in their own life, because, let’s be for real, we all know that teaching is more than just a math or social studies lesson.

14 Years In The Classroom

This upcoming year will be my 14th year in the classroom. Now you may be saying, “well 14 years isn’t that long Khrystina.” Well it really isn’t but then again it is!!

Let’s break down what 14 years “somewhat” looks like.

  • 14 years of early morning and late evening departures and dismissals
  • 14 years of playing counselor and psychologist
  • 14 years of playing police officer and detective
  • 14 years of playing therapist
  • 14 years of being a confidant to my kiddos because When they hurt, I hurt.
  • 14 years of playing banker. “Ok, does anyone have anymore field trip money?”… only to find out that Johnny’s had his field trip money in the bottom of his book bag for TWO MONTHS!
  • 14 years of being a librarian
  • 14 years of being a psychic… “Ok Karis, I am guessing that…”
  • 14 years of being a custodian. I can’t even begin to describe to you the nasty scenes I’ve witnessed with sick students. O.M.GOOOMMMGGG
  • 14 years of playing photographer
  • 14 years of being a mother and a father. When I tell you I have the “look“; I have the “look“. I swear! I even won an award one year for having that “look.”
  • 14 years of being a doctor. Rubbing the backs of sick students and watching / walking with them through many illnesses both minor and life threatening.
  • 14 years of being a politician and a dietitian.
  • 14 years of being a stand up comedian, MC, and a true act if I do say so myself.

I know for a fact had it not been for my classroom management, I definitely would not be half the teacher that I am today. Having great classroom management is key to the success of any classroom environment, whether that be in the classroom itself or through distance/e-learning.

My Passion In Teaching

Ok. So here are the 4 key components to teaching. These are my passions in teaching:

  • Classroom Management
  • Classroom Communication (both with students and parents)
  • Classroom Organization &
  • Classroom Discipline

I am passionate about changing the learning environment and making it something simply amazing for my students. What I’ve learned during COVID (and we won’t really go all the way there), is that my passion doesn’t just turn on or off due to the environment. Despite COVID I was still able to use those same passions.

I want my students to know that I love them and want the best for them. want to truly be their biggest cheerleader! I want my students to know that I am that advocate and will go to the ends of the earth for them. My students should know that their teacher has their back, no matter what.

None of these things can happen though unless these four main areas are addressed and are implemented within the classroom or outside of the classroom.

Love First, Teach Second

I want to go ahead and tell you just a little bit about my 4 passions, but I’d like to preface this by stating the following:

You can have the best classroom management, communication, organization, and discipline system in the world, but if your students don’t feel like you care or support them, You will never have a self-sufficient classroom. All four of these components play hand in hand and care must come first. My classroom motto is “Love First, Teach Second”.

Letting My Passion Do The Talking

OK! Now let’s briefly go ahead and talk about all 4 key components of teaching and why they are truly my passions.

Classroom Management: This is my baby. I want to preference what I am about to say by first stating that my intentions are not to come across as boastful or arrogant because this truly is my baby. The thing that I enjoy the most about being in the classroom is having the ability to create systems and processes and then implement them.

My favorite thing about the start of the new school year is to set up our classroom environment. I enjoy getting together our class schedule (although let’s be honest, we don’t really get a solid schedule until mid September), routines, procedures, and expectations. I enjoy introducing these classroom expectations to my students because I know that the sooner we understand them, the easier the year will become.

Every single year I have teachers ask me, what it is that I do in my classroom because they can tell the difference between my class and the class across the hall. Again, I do not want to come across as arrogant because I am honestly sharing my personal experience. I know that I get my classroom management skills from my #1 teacher, my mother. I know that having a great classroom management plan is vital to the success of our school year. I don’t have a magic wand. Having great classroom management is hard work, but definitely pays off in the end.

Now you may be asking me, why I enjoy this so much. Well, that would be a great question. Most teachers don’t find this part to be the fun part. I find it to be the most enjoyable part of the year because without having a good grasp on classroom management, and implementing this in the beginning of the school year, I know that the entire school year will be miserable. I am all about working hard in the beginning of the school year, so that by November or December at the latest, my classroom can run self-sufficiently.

Classroom Discipline: In order to truly have a self-sufficient classroom you have to have a great discipline and reward plan. It never fails. Teachers who go into the school year without having established a strong classroom discipline plan set themselves up to have a rough 180 days. Students need structure and they need to know what is allowed and what isn’t allowed. Getting to know our students and earning their trust as early as we can, will help your classroom discipline plan tremendously!

Classroom Communication: In my classroom this pertains to not only my students, but also to their parents. Building a strong foundation with parents, and having clear communication between students and parents is very important. There are a variety of ways that you can have communication in your classroom and there are many apps that make this so much easier than when I initially began teaching.

I LOVE using the REMIND app to communicate with parents on a daily basis. With the REMIND app I’m able to let parents have a view into our classroom without actually being in the classroom. This isn’t my only form of communication I use with parents but it is a major one. Since I teach elementary, I also use behavior calendars and these also work so well.

With the behavior calendar I can easily let parent’s know how their child’s day was. I can leave a comment, and parents can also leave me a comment. I will create another blog post soon that will go into detail about my behavior calendars and how they work on a daily basis in my classroom.

Classroom Organization: Organization definitely helps to cut down on potential problems and potential time wasting. We all know as educators that we do not have time to lose not even a minute. Every second in the classroom is so important. Now, being organized is not only in reference to your students supplies, belongings, or other classroom items; but also covers your own supplies as well.

I can’t tell you the amount of times a coworker has come into my classroom to ask me about a form, a resource, or other item that they may need, and I am readily able to get it to them. Being organized definitely helps to lesson the stress and frustration of trying to find something important. I do know though that being organized does not come easy to everyone and will take lots of hard work. I am very organized, but always feel that I can do a lot better.

Bringing The 4 Key Components of Teaching Together

We’ve just finished distance learning and I know that everyone is ready for a break. As we close this chapter, teachers from all over are beginning to prepare and think about the following year. Will we be going back? Will we continue with distance learning? What will the new year look like?

Regardless of having answers to these questions or not, any classroom that wants to thrive and be self-sufficient must have these four components as the foundation to any potential classroom that one may hope to build. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that I’ve needed these four components both inside of my actual classroom as well as inside of my home office / new classroom). How are you incorporating these components within your classroom?

Virtual Awards Presentation

Many of us are now preparing a distance learning presentation or a virtual awards presentation for our class. Let’s be for real. Typically during this time of the year, teachers all over are trying to tie up loose ends, are entering final grades, and are preparing for Awards Day. While we are still doing those things, we know that our awards day is going to look a lot different than any other awards day we’ve had.

I wanted to do something super special for my students and so I really sat down to think about how I could make it special for them. My wheels were turning, and so I went into power point and began to get creative.

I decided to use my favorite fonts as well as vibrant colors set against different versions of gray.

Once I finished our typical school awards, I realized that not all students were actually receiving an award. I did want to make sure that all students who participated in distance learning received an award and so I created a Distance Learning Completion Certificate for all students who put forth an effort to do their best and work during these past few weeks.

After I finished this, I then went in and worked on what I wanted my animations and transitions to look like. This part is always fun for me because I can get super creative!

Now that the presentation in itself seemed to be complete, I definitely wanted to jazz it up a bit by adding a song to the mix. But how was I going to add a song to the presentation and keep it as simple as possible? Well, that is where Final Cut Pro came in, and what a game changer it was!

I did a simple screen recording by using QuickTime Player and recorded the presentation just as I would in power point. Then I uploaded it to Final Cut Pro and added Kool & the Gang- Celebration to the presentation show! The final product was simply amazing!

(SHORT PREVIEW OF FINAL PRESENTATION)

While I can’t share Final Cut Pro or QuickTime Player with you, I can definitely share the template I created with you! I did include directions in this FREE Virtual Awards Presentation that will help you to be able to add your own music without Final Cut pro or QuickTime Player!
